From saving the world with his shield in Captain America to bringing the heat as the Human Torch in Fantastic Four, Chris Evans has long been the face of Hollywood’s superhero scene. After putting down his shield in Avengers: Endgame he’s continued to take on action packed roles like Lloyd Hansen in The Gray Man. While he’s best known for the thrills, stunts, and smouldering intensity, it’s hard to deny his dreamy presence and undeniable charm, which have made him a fan favourite in romantic films as well.

Chris Evans is once again stealing hearts with his role as John, a charming but broke caterer, and one of Lucy’s main love interests in A24’s Materialists. While Dakota Johnson’s Lucy may be caught in a confusing love triangle between John and Harry Castillo (we get it, choosing between Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal is practically impossible), Evans has reinstated his position as the internet’s forever crush. With Materialists making waves, now’s the perfect time to revisit every romantic movie starring Chris Evans.

An early 2000s rom-com parody that hilariously mocks every teen movie trope in the book. A young Chris Evans stars as Jake Wyler, the stereotypical high school jock and slacker boyfriend, in Not Another Teen Movie. Set in the absurdly clichéd John Hughes High, the story kicks off with head cheerleader Priscilla (Jaime Pressly) dramatically dumping Jake. Determined to prove a point, Jake makes a bet with his friend Austin (Eric Christian Olsen) that he can turn the school nerd, Janey (Chyler Leigh), into the next prom queen. What follows is a series of ridiculous, over-the-top moments that poke fun at nearly every teen rom-com made before it. While most of the romance is played for laughs, Not Another Teen Movie is a nostalgic and entertaining watch, especially if you're curious about one of Chris Evans’ earliest (and funniest) roles.

London

2005

London sees Evans in a more serious and brooding role. The movie follows Syd (Chris Evans), who receives a phone call from one of his friends informing him that his ex-girlfriend London (Jessica Biel) will soon be moving away to California with her new boyfriend. Syd, who has been deeply depressed since their breakup, flies into a fit of rage and decides to crash her going-away party in a last-ditch attempt to win her over. What follows is a night of chaotic emotions and drug fuelled introspection as Syd wrestles with his past and the possibility of losing his ex-girlfriend forever. The film is a moody and raw exploration of ex-lovers, emotional damage, and the painful process of closure.

Scarlett Johansson and Chris Evans have been close friends and frequent co-stars for many years, and their undeniable chemistry has sparked several romantic rumours over time. While the pair have never dated in real life, they do play love interests in the 2007 comedy-drama The Nanny Diaries. In the film, Johansson stars as Annie, a clueless college graduate who takes a nanny job for a wealthy socialite while she figures out her future. Evans plays Hayden, affectionately dubbed “Harvard Hottie,” Annie’s charming and quietly supportive neighbour who becomes her primary love interest. Despite his limited screen time, Evans made a lasting impression becoming everyone’s crush, not just Annie’s.

Chris Evans plays Jimmy Dobyne, a handsome, principled young man who is hired as an escort by the daughter of a wealthy but corrupt and ostracised businessman in the romantic period drama The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond. Set in 1923 in Memphis, Tennessee, the movie follows heiress Fisher Willow (Bryce Dallas Howard), who returns home after studying abroad to reluctantly participate in the tradition of being presented to society at the request of her wailing aunt. Given her father’s poor reputation and her own free-spirited nature, Fisher struggles to find an escort, ultimately resorting to paying Jimmy Dobyne, the great-grandson of a former governor, to accompany her. Together, the two navigate the expectations of the Southern social season, dealing with class tensions, personal insecurities, the mysterious loss of a precious diamond earring, and the growing complexity of their own mixed feelings.

If you’re a fan of good old classic 2000s romantic comedies, What’s Your Number? is the perfect movie to add to your watchlist. The movie follows Ally Darling (Anna Faris), a thirty-something woman who comes across a Marie Claire article about how women who have more than 20 romantic partners struggle to find a husband, and panics, realising she’s already slept with 20 people. Ally then decides to track down all her ex-romantic partners, hoping to find "the one." Chris Evans plays the role of Ally’s musician neighbour, Colin Shea, an unattached playboy who helps Ally track down her exes as long as she helps him ward off his one-night stands. Their unexpected partnership sparks a messy but cute romance.

Playing It Cool

Chris Evans once again takes on the role of a womanising playboy who unexpectedly falls head over heels in Playing It Cool. He plays Me, a screenwriter who dreams of writing action movies but is instead assigned a romantic comedy by his boss. Clueless about love, he struggles to make progress until he meets Her (Michelle Monaghan) at a charity event. After a classic rom-com meet-cute, he finds himself unable to stop thinking about Her, leading him to experience the ups and downs of love firsthand. With an airport chase, a tangled love triangle, and plenty of heart, Playing It Cool ticks all the boxes for a fun, feel-good rom-com.

Before We Go

2014

A lot can happen in one night, especially in New York City. Before We Go is a romantic drama set in NYC that also marks Chris Evans' directorial debut. The movie follows Nick Vaughn (Chris Evans), a street musician who crosses paths with Brooke (Alice Eve), a young woman who misses her last train home and has her purse stolen. Determined to help, Nick embarks on a night full of unexpected adventure as they try to retrieve her belongings and get her home. Along the way, they share meaningful conversations that help both process their past relationships. Before We Go isn’t a film that sweeps you off your feet with grand romance; instead, it gently explores the weight of brief encounters and the quiet beauty of human connection.

2023

In Ghosted, Chris Evans flips the script by taking on the role of an ordinary guy instead of his usual action-hero persona. The film cleverly blends classic spy-action tropes with the grand gestures and mismatched pairings you'd expect from a romantic comedy to deliver a uniquely entertaining watch. Cole (Chris Evans), a charming but down-to-earth farmer, ends up going on the best first date of his life with Sadie (Ana de Armas), a beautiful yet mysterious art curator who’s his complete opposite. When she ghosts him, he takes a leap of faith and follows her to London for a second chance. What begins as a romantic grand gesture quickly spirals into chaos when he discovers that Sadie is actually a spy, pulling him into a globe-trotting espionage adventure.

Materialists

2025

Chris Evans stars alongside Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal in this romantic drama produced by A24. Inspired by the personal experiences of writer-director Celine Song, the film follows Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a high-end matchmaker, as she struggles to choose between Harry Castillo (Pedro Pascal), a wealthy unicorn financier, and her emotionally resonant ex, John (Chris Evans), who now works as a caterer. Materialists is not your typical romantic comedy. Instead, it’s a sharp, thoughtful, and socially aware take on modern relationships, the commodification of romance, and the complexities of consent.
