There’s very rarely a film in Mammootty’s much-storied screen career that doesn’t hit the right notes. Watching all of the Malayalam acting maestro’s movies can be a Herculean task but we’ve got you covered with a definitive watchlist of his best works along with a handy guide to stream them.

Before you embark on a Mammootty binge (prepare yourself for some tears and thrills), have a look how a law student became an extra and later one of the greatest Indian actors of all time.

Early Beginnings

Mammootty’s screen career spans over four decades, during which he has portrayed a diverse array of characters, ranging from intense dramatic roles to lighthearted comedies. While he was pursuing law in college, Mammootty made his screen debut as an extra in the 1971 film Anubhavangal Paalichakal and later gained widespread recognition with his breakthrough performance in Sphodanam (1975). However, it was his role as a police officer in the 1980 film Athirathram that catapulted him to stardom.

Continuing Dominance In The 1980s and 1990s

If you watch Mammootty’s cult classics from the 1980s and 1990s, he priorotised emotional prowess over flashy heroics as is evident in films like the period epic Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989), the prison-centric romance Mathilukal (1990), and the social drama Vidheyan (1993). His ability to effortlessly inhabit complex characters earned him critical acclaim and numerous awards, including three National Film Awards for Best Actor.

Mammootty’s Commitment To Socially Relevant Cinema

In the 2000s, Mammootty continued to showcase his versatility by taking on a diverse range of roles. From portraying historical figures like the British-fighting ruler Pazhassi Raja in Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (2009) to portraying a single father taking care of a child with cerebral palsy in Peranbu (2018), he demonstrated his willingness to push boundaries and explore unconventional characters.

His recent effort Kaathal - The Core similarly earned him rave reviews for his touching portrayal as a middle-aged gay man coming out to his wife. At a time when mainstream heroes are afraid of making any bold statements so outrightly, Mammootty has constantly upheld his morals to take on challenging roles with a positive social message.

Be it the psychological thriller Rorschach or the situational comedy of errors Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (in which he had a double role), you can still watch a much older Mammooty (now in his 70s) still deliver a chameleon-like transformative charisma in every role. Age is just a number for this man.

Mammootty The Producer

Mammootty’s contributions to Indian cinema extend beyond acting. In 1991, he founded his production company, Playhouse Motion Pictures, to support independent and experimental films. Through his production house, he has produced several acclaimed films, including Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (2009) and Kadal Kadannu Oru Maathukutty (2013).

Why is Thaniyavartanam Mammootty’s best movie?

It’s hard to crown one Mammootty movie as his absolute best but the 1987 Malayalam drama Thaniyavartanam continues to age well with every passing decade. Featuring Mammoottty as a progressive school teacher, the Malayalam classic explores relevant themes like religious orthodoxy and superstitions in the rural hinterland of Kerala, the dwindling influence of upper-caste Nair families, and social attitudes towards people with mental illnesses. With a powerhouse performance by Mammootty and screenwriter A. K. Lohithadas razorsharp observations on society, Thaniyavartanam can be watched as an all-time Mammootty favourite.

Where can you watch Mammootty’s filmography?

Many of Mammootty’s recent movies from the late 2010s and early 2020s can be streamed on Netflix or Prime Video. If you wish to watch his older works, then Eros Now, Jio Cinema, and ZEE5 can come to your rescue.
